Retake the VTNE®
About Retakes
If you didn’t pass the VTNE and would like to retake it, here’s what you need to know:
- You can only take the VTNE one time in a 30-day period. You may submit a new VTNE application within the same window before the window cutoff date, if applicable.
- You need to submit a new VTNE online application and pay the full application fee.
- It’s your responsibility to confirm that your retake application documents have been submitted to the AAVSB.
- You’ll need to review the website of your state or provincial agency for retake requirements and fees. It’s your responsibility to be mindful of retake limits.

Request Approval for Over Five Attempts
The AAVSB allows candidates to take the VTNE up to five times, however, some jurisdictions have more stringent retake requirements and require prior approval to retake the exam. Attempts are counted from exams taken on or after January 1, 2006. The AAVSB Board of Directors requires additional documentation for approval to retake the exam beyond five attempts.
